Storm By Kate Chopin "The Storm" by Kate Chopin is a great literary example of the use of setting. Chopin uses setting to not only influence the reader's senses, but also, to illustrate the actions and feelings of her characters. Chopin uses a great choice of short descriptive words to describe her setting such as: "[W]hile the storm burst. It shook the wooden store and seemed to be ripping great furrows in the distant field" (Chopin, 96), and "The rain beat on the low, shingled roof with a force and clatter that threatened to break an entrance and deluge them there" (96), to thrust the reader into the sense of being in the storm that is baring down on her characters. The description of her setting also helps to make the characters actions and feelings more powerful and exciting to the reader than if the story had taken place in a different setting. Chopin's choice of setting also coincides with the actions and feelings of her characters. In the depths of the raging storm the characters Alcee and Calixta's passion is as sudden and intense as the storm itself. Chopin describes the lovers' passion within the storm, "They did not heed the crashing torrents, and the roar of the elements made her laugh as she lay in his arms" (97). Even as the storm was intense, as was the lovers' passion so as the storm begins to tire itself out so do the lovers. "The growl of the thunder was distant and passing away. The rain beat softly on the shingles, inviting them to drowsiness and sleep." (98) As the storm ends and the land is renewed, "The rain was over and the sun was turning the glistening green world into a place of gems" (98), so it seems is the characters' relationships. It is as if the storm has a profound effect on the characters that make them appreciate those around them whom they love. Expecting his wife to be worried and angry, Bobinot expects to find his wife to be ready to explode when he and his son arrive home. However, "Bobinot's explanations and apologies which he had been composing all along the way, died on his lips as Calixta felt him to see if he was dry, and seem to express nothing but satisfaction at their safe return" (98). Not only did the storm and sudden passion effect Calixta it also effected Alcee: "Alcee Laballiere wrote his wife, Clarisse, that night. It was a loving letter full of tender solicitude. He told her not to hurry back, but if her and the babies liked it in Biloxi, to stay a month longer. He was getting on nicely; and though he missed them, he was willing to bear separation a while longer-- realizing that their health and pleasure were the first things to be considered" (99). The American Revolution was a momentous event that changed the face of the whole world. Though the Revolutionary War lasted only a few short years, the American Revolution was a process that started long before the first shots of war were fired. The rebellion was permeated with the legacy of colonial political ideals, aggravated by parliamentary taxation, escalated by the restriction of American civil liberties and ignited by British military measures. England had a hard time controlling its American colonies from the very beginning, leaving them to develop relatively on their own for several generations. The North American continent is close to 3,000 miles away from England and the trip from England to American by boat in the 1600s took six to eight weeks if not longer. The trip was not easy and many died along the way, but when immigrants did reach the New World they arrived a bit changed by their harrowing journey. These new immigrants were met with a clean, new, virgin land, virtually unchanged for thousands of years. It was as if they had landed on a whole separate planet. These immigrants, then, established new societies based on whatever personal religious or political values they had, far from the shadow of England. Over 150 years later these values still lived strongly in the descendants of these original settlers. The rights of the individual were dominant in every aspect of American life in 1763. From the relative religi ous freedom, to the independence of the press, to the coveted public town meeting, Americans, unlike many Europeans at the time, enjoyed the right to choose how they lived their lives. Theoretically, under the concept of mercantilism, which affirmed that the sole purpose of a colony was to provide for its mother country, Americans were restricted economically. But, until 1763, with England's practice of salutary neglect, Americans enjoyed economic freedom and were able to trade covertly with whomever they wished. The title of a novel can be one of the most powerful aspects of a book. For instance, when a reader reads the title The Sun Also Rises, written by Ernest Hemingway, the reader is able to understand that the title of the novel is connected directly to the message that the author is attempting to convey. The title later brings forth much more significance towards the very end of the novel when the reader pauses and contemplates Hemingway’s motives. The title The Sun Also Rises has the ability to stimulate deep thought within a reader, thus forcing the reader to grasp a higher level of thinking in order to understand the true meaning of the book. Lady Brett Ashley carries herself with such elegance, allowing the reader to distinguish her character from others. Hemingway designed Lady Brett Ashley to bear the utmost confidence and delicacy when compared to other characters such as Robert Cohn or Jake Barnes who show their emotion through their actions. Lady Brett Ashley spoke regretfully towards the end of the novel, â€Å"I didn’t know whether I could make him go, and I didn’t have a soul to go away and leave him. He tried to give me a lot of money, you know† (246). The alluring Brett is by far the most fascinating being that Hemingway had thought up. She appears to be carefree, vibrant, warm, and independent. The way that Hemingway chose to conceal Brett’s constant agony intrigues the reader. Brett is an intelligent individual and is gifted with natural charm, yet is never able to designate a single lover to spend her life with. She is constantly looking for attention from the wrong audien ce. This subconscious craving for love leads Brett to heartbreak, happening several times over the course of the story.
